New York has the Statue of Liberty and Washington DC has its monuments. And Tyrone? It has its Pig Hole. The glamour of a pedestrian underpass could mean nothing to people from a university town or a farming community, but Tyrone has the Pig Hole and residents along Railroad Street, which is formally known as Washington Avenue, know well the underpass at 11th Street.
To young visitors, especially those from out of town, the Pig Hole is a wondrous thing, especially if a train is going over the tracks a few feet above your heads. In the days before people got their thrill from bungee jumping, this was exciting. Never mind that track dirt might sift down on them, kids still liked the thrill of going through the Pig Hole when a train was passing over. They never saw the litter and weeds that were growing on the steps.
Never to be forgotten was the wish expressed many years ago by two kids from Huntingdon when asked what they’d like to do. “Let’s go to Tyrone,” they responded to their mother and dad, who immediately assumed they wanted to go to Bland’s Park.
“And what would you like to do in Tyrone?”
And the answer was, “Let’s go to Tyrone so we can go through the Pig Hole.”
