McLanahan Drug Store — 1006 Pennsylvania Ave.
Circa 1915. The interior shows the elegance and refinement of the day. Fixtures were of mahogany, with marble floors and the latest decor. Wm. H. McLanahan owned the store until 1948. Subsequent owners included Wm. Cutts and Wm. Hodgson (partners); then Hodgson as sole owner; and in 1955, the business was purchased by J. Leslie Fink Jr. and his wife, Mardell.
First National Bank
This beautifully appointed building opened its doors, after two previous addresses, on October 6, 1906 on the southeast corner of Pennsylvania Ave. and 10th St. Only the best materials went into the construction. It was lavishly decorated with Italian and Tennessee marble, mahogany, and white oak. In its entirety, the cost was $125,000. The Tyrone-Snyder Public Library now sits at this location.
First Methodist Church
In 1885, the First Methodist Church was built on the southwest corner of Logan Ave. and 12th St. It was a large, red-brick edifice of Romanesque design. The original cost was $22,500. Later, the name was changed to Wesley United Methodist. The structure was used until 1958, when it was condemned as structurally unsafe. Rev. Roy O. Bodtorf was pastor at the time.
