Tyrone Area Historical Society is committed to making this website usable by everyone, including people who use assistive technologies. We design and build to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA — the standard U.S. courts and the Department of Justice look to under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Conformance status
We believe this site is substantially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA: most of the site meets the standard. Some older or scanned material may not yet meet every success criterion, and we are actively working to close those gaps. If you hit a barrier anywhere, please tell us using the contact details below.
What we do
- Use semantic HTML throughout the site so screen readers can announce structure (headings, landmarks, lists, tables).
- Provide a "Skip to content" link as the first focusable element on every page.
- Maintain a visible focus indicator on every interactive element (buttons, links, form fields, tabs, dropdowns).
- Verify color contrast meets or exceeds 4.5:1 for body text and 3:1 for large text against the green, brass, and cream palette.
- Honor the operating-system "reduce motion" setting — animations and the homepage carousel pause for visitors who prefer reduced motion.
- Provide a visible Pause control for content that moves or advances on its own (the homepage slideshow and the sponsor banner), so anyone can stop the motion — not only visitors who have "reduce motion" turned on.
- Honor "forced colors" / Windows High Contrast mode so the site remains legible with custom system palettes.
- Provide alt text on all meaningful images, and decorative images are marked so screen readers skip them.
- Make the entire site keyboard-navigable — including the search drawer, mobile menu, dropdown menus, and PDF viewer modals (Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Space, Esc, Arrow keys).
- Use ARIA labels and roles on custom controls (the homepage carousel, the cookie banner, and the search and filter widgets) so they announce correctly.
Known limitations
Some historical documents in our archive are scanned PDFs that are not yet OCR-processed. We are working through these as time and volunteers allow. If you need help reading a specific document, please contact us — a volunteer will read or transcribe the relevant section for you at no charge.
