About the Society

Preserving Tyrone's story
for the next generation.

A volunteer-driven nonprofit dedicated to gathering and sharing the people, places, and memories that make Tyrone what it is.

Our Mission

A free, accessible home for Tyrone's history.

The Tyrone Area Historical Society exists to gather, preserve, and freely share the artifacts, documents, photographs, and oral histories that tell the story of Tyrone, Pennsylvania, a proud Pennsylvania Railroad town built by Irish, German, Welsh, Italian, and Eastern European families.

We believe these treasures belong to the community. Every display in our museum was donated; every record in our archives was given by a neighbor or descendant. Our mission is to keep them accessible to everyone, freely and without paywalls or membership requirements, so that anyone with a question about Tyrone's past can find an answer.

Established 1990

How we began.

[Demo content: to be replaced with the Society's actual founding narrative]

In the spring of 1990, a small group of Tyrone residents, alarmed at how often historical photographs, ledgers, and old keepsakes were being lost in estate sales and demolitions, gathered to form a nonprofit committed to preserving the story of their hometown.

What began with a single filing cabinet of donated documents has grown, three decades later, into a museum at 1015 Logan Avenue, an active genealogy and research operation, a soldier database tracing local service from the Revolutionary War forward, and an archive of thousands of artifacts, all made possible by volunteers and the families who continue to share their pieces of Tyrone's past.

We remain entirely volunteer-led. Every officer, every director, and every researcher you'll meet on these pages serves without pay, because we believe Tyrone's history is worth keeping.

What We Do

Three pillars of our work.

Collections & Curation

We accept, catalog, conserve, and exhibit artifacts donated by Tyrone families, from railroad lanterns and shop tools to wedding albums, church registers, and oral history recordings.

Research & Genealogy

Our volunteer researchers help descendants and visitors trace family lines, locate burial sites, identify photographs, and reconstruct the lives of Tyrone soldiers, workers, and immigrants.

Education & Outreach

Through school visits, public programs, our quarterly newsletter, and the Tyrone Station livestream, we bring the town's history to anyone curious enough to look.

Get Involved

Tyrone's history needs you.

Every artifact, photograph, and family story you share keeps a thread of this town's history from being lost. Here's how to take part.
