November 13, 1895 — Eating Grape Seeds Does Not Cause Appendicitis
An Albany grape grower says that in the packing houses children eat grapes all day at any time they like. He said he never saw any one of them separate the seed from the pulp. He swallows the seeds himself, and in twenty years he has never heard of a case of appendicitis.
November 20, 1895 — Bite Your Nickel
At the present time Bellefonte is flooded with counterfeit five and ten cent pieces. The imitations are of lead and of a very poor make. One store alone refused about twenty of these spurious coins last week.
December 6, 1895 — Hazing Incident
The disgraceful hazing incident at State College recently, when fourteen students were suspended for shooting Daniel Shivery’s house with a cannon was finally settled. The students clubbed together and raised enough money to pay Mr. Shivery for the damage done to his property. The students were to have appeared in court last week as a result of Shivery’s prosecution, but the hazers have escaped that ignominy.
December 11, 1895 — Deaf Cure Swindle
An old swindle is being worked in some neighboring counties with successful results by a fakir. Equipped with two watches, one having a faint, and the other a loud tick, he goes to work curing many deaf people with many bottles of liniment. By offering to cure one or more free of charge he gets his victim, applies the watch having the weak tick to the ear and returns the watch to his pocket. He applies some “Lightning Liniment,” does some considerable talking and rubbing, and winds up applying the other watch with the loud tick to the ear. After his cure he makes probably a dozen sales and excites further interest by making another cure.
December 12, 1895 — Pneumonia Cure
It is said by applying a fresh cat skin to the breast of a pneumonia patient immediate relief and ultimate cure is affected. It will do no harm to try the experiment. Always use your neighbor’s cat.
